Well, as I posted on Twitter, the Apple TV was not busted, but just experiencing an odd issue with my 26″ Sony 702p HDTV in the office. When I returned it back to our typical 40″ Samsung 720p HDTV, all worked well. Last night I received my new Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950q USB TV Tuner. I have it hooked up in Windows Vista x64 along with a cheap antenna and all seems to be working well. I also have a tool called MCEBuddy converting the output files into h.264 MPEG4 videos to go up on the Apple TV. I’m getting to that final solution where I can finally dump the cable service for TV all together. Now, if I just had a solid local alternative to Time Warner Cable for my internet connection as their service (choice of channels/bandwidth) is fairly lousy and the pricing is even more so.

Possibility of suckage is high, but I am a SUCKER for all things superhero (except Catwoman which was just downright evil). I just enjoying watching these things most of the time. Which is why so much is getting made. They KNOW there are geeks such as myself who will gobble it up

I am Nicktoons Iron Man
July 16, 2008So, Iron Man Armored Adventures is coming in 2009. I’m sure I’ll watch as I can enjoy almost any superhero type animated or live-action that comes my way to some degree. However, I do wish we could recreate what made Batman The Animated Series great rather than doing more childification (doh, gotta be a word ) of great comic series. Not everything has to be designed to cater to children. Much of it, I would say, they will enjoy and you don’t have to dumb it down (assuming that is what is happening here based on the trailer)…
Also, the Mandarin? This is the second recent animated Iron Man to focus on the Mandarin… I could do with someone different…

New HDTV in the house…

Tonight I picked up a new HDTV. This isn’t to replace my existing Samsung 40″ HDTV, but to sit in my office and to accompany me on the occasional trip (yes, I am that hooked on HD movies & games ). This particular unit is a Sony KDL-26M4000. It’s a 26″ 720P LCD and I have to say, it is quite nice. I had actually not expected to find this TV. I went to Best Buy expecting to pick up an HP w2408h monitor or some other 26″ LCD TV. I had looked for the Sony, but I wasn’t sure it was out yet as nowhere had it in stock (Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.). However, when I got there I noticed a single one of these Sony sets on the shelf. I quickly grabbed it, used my 12% off coupon, and made my way out of the store.
Now that I have it at home, I have to say that I am quite pleased with it. The picture, while smaller than my 40″ Samsung, seems more crisp and looks to have better black levels (however, I do not have them sitting side by side for a proper comparison). It has some nice features, such as proper input labeling, auto sort of input by use, auto blacklight control, etc. It isn’t fully feature-packed, but for the price, it is quite nice.
I’m watching the movie ‘Hitman’ on Blu-ray right now and the TV is about 2 - 2.5 feet away. No problems with quality at all with the exception of some occasional color banding which is somewhat expected in this price range.
All in all, a very good price to performance mix…

Firefly Special Edition?

I really hope this is true, but only if we get a Blu-ray version. I own the previous version and I don’t really buy DVDs any longer, but I would double-dip for a Blu-ray version. This should be very doable given that Firefly shows on HDNet or UHD (can’t recall which right now) quite often and it looks darn good.
Here’s hoping for a bit more brown coat celebration in my future

TV Shows on DVD has confirmation from Fox that it will be coming out on Blu-ray!
