So, I just bought a Flip Video camera not too terribly long ago and guess what, they released a new Flip Mino HD version yesterday. 720p in the same tiny form factor. I hope that we can pick one up in the future, but for now, I will wait to see how the reviews hold up.
Ugh, I should have known this would happen the moment I clicked ‘Add to Shopping Cart’ at Amazon
Well, as I posted on Twitter, the Apple TV was not busted, but just experiencing an odd issue with my 26″ Sony 702p HDTV in the office. When I returned it back to our typical 40″ Samsung 720p HDTV, all worked well. Last night I received my new Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950q USB TV Tuner. I have it hooked up in Windows Vista x64 along with a cheap antenna and all seems to be working well. I also have a tool called MCEBuddy converting the output files into h.264 MPEG4 videos to go up on the Apple TV. I’m getting to that final solution where I can finally dump the cable service for TV all together. Now, if I just had a solid local alternative to Time Warner Cable for my internet connection as their service (choice of channels/bandwidth) is fairly lousy and the pricing is even more so.
I picked up a Flip Mino video camera from Amazon and it was delivered today. I wasted no time capturing a quick video of Ben where he first used the word “pink” in reference to his spoon. I know there are higher quality options, but I wanted dead simple so that we could quickly grab footage of Ben doing the crazy things he does.
I was surprised how poorly the Flip’s built-in software handled the YouTube upload. The following video is my upload to YouTube of the full quality video, however, I’ve linked the version done by Flip at the end of this article. It appears they are over-compressing the video before sending to avoid the VERY long upload time I experienced (full quality video was 36.9MB). The problem is their method doesn’t get YouTube to offer the “watch in high-quality” option whereas my does.
Other than that gripe, I generally like the video camera from what little I have seen so far; natural colors, light, simple, cool USB flip-out connector. I’m sure I’ll have more to say as we use it further (Heather will likely be grabbing some footage at the beach this weekend).
If you want to see the version uploaded by Flip’s software, go here.
UPDATE:YouTube video replaced by higher quality Vimeo video…
I never read Esquire, but I’ve been waiting for some time to see E-Ink used in the mass market and so far I am quite impressed. It has very similar physical properties to paper and it not washed out by sunlight as a typical LCD screen would be. I didn’t video the Ford ad on the opposite side of the cover as it didn’t seem nearly as visually impressive. I simply cannot wait to see this technology used in more ways…
I found this over on Engadget HD. I’ve never consider making my own drive-in movie, but also, I think the weather in the south gets a tad too humid for it. Not all that desirable to sit outside, but it’s still really freakin’ cool. You really have to check out the equipment list and see all the work that he put into it. I then saw a link to Backyard Theater, so it seems that this scene has been around for some time and a large number of people are doing it.
I love this as I really think teams should have friendly competition. We all work in the same industry and there is no reason whatsoever that we can’t be cordial. After all, increased focus on the web is good for both teams and in my opinion they benefit from the challenge. I think a rising tide really does raise all boats.
Could we be getting a new iSight? The original Firewire-based model was quite good. I now have an iSight in my MacBook, but the thought of a true HD version of the iSight sounds quite intruiging…
D-Link looks to have some interesting network-enabled cameras available. I am most interested in the top model that has wireless and wired support, the DCS-920. It purports to support both WPA and WPA2 and some useful access methods:
SMTP Client
FTP Client
HTTP Server
I find it for ~$100 online and could be useful for monitoring of the kid or for security?
I really like the idea of this External USB SATA Drive Dock that I found over at ThinkGeek. I really think it could be very useful to simply pop the drive in rather than having to always mount and unmount when transferring files.
