In Beta 2 of iPhone OS 2.2, developers are finding that the following cool features are present, but may or may not see the light of day with this release:
Google Street View
E-mailing of current location
Downloading of Podcasts
The last one is what caught my eye the most. I would LOVE to be able to download my podcasts directly on the iPhone as I would have much less reason to ever dock as I already get mail, calendar, contact changes via IMAP or push (well, push-y sync).
This would be a great feature and I hope they ship 2.2 with all of this enabled soon…
Because the Flip Video Program has been designed to work on the 32-bit systems, we cannot guarantee full functionality if used on a 64-bit system. At this time, we do not have information regarding the development of an application for the 64-bit systems.
We hope this has adequately addressed your question.
Thank you,
Flip Video Support
That is the answer I got from Flip (after a couple of back and forths) when asking why I couldn’t get reasonable quality out of their “Movie Mix” feature (starkly reduces quality and lowers resolution to 320×240) or why their codec doesn’t work in Windows Movie Maker (seems to for others, but they’re probably on 32 bit).
This is simply not an acceptable answer in this day and age. 64 bit Vista is a VERY mainstream OS and came on almost every laptop I looked at. Developers, you can no longer be lazy and ignore compatibility.
Oh well, editing in iMovie ‘08 works great, so no biggie there, but I want to be able to use either platform successfully
So, Google officially launched Chrome yesterday and I grabbed a copy for my Windows Vista image running under Boot Camp (as there is no Mac version yet). I’ve only done some rudimentary playing around with it, so these are just initial thoughts:
Windows Vista system crashed after install, causation or coincidence (could have been another process’ fault)?
UI is interesting, minimalistic, but I’m not sure I really like it yet.
No flash plugin included?
“Quick Dial” could be useful (Opera had this first)
So, Google has posted on their blog and published a comic to be sent to some individuals in an effort to highlight that they are releasing a new browser named Chrome. It seems that it may show up here tomorrow. Initially it sounds like it will only be available on Windows, but with Mac & Linux to follow. It will also be based on Webkit the same as Apple’s Safari.
Based on what I have read so far, it doesn’t sound like Chrome brings anything truly new to the browser wars, but I am looking forward to seeing what they’ve done. Will it work “better” with Google products? Will it be faster than any other browser across the board? What do they intend to do here to rise above their competitors?
The landscape is getting somewhat crowded with IE8 in beta, Safari expanding, Firefox 3, and now Chrome (no, Opera doesn’t make my list).
All in all, this is quite a cool time to be on the web…
Interesting UI for an audio recorder, but will this visual metaphor mean anything to the younger crowd? Yes, I very well remember recording my albums and radio clips onto tapes, but does anyone who is 18-21 or younger?
I got my first CD player for Christmas in 1990 I believe. It was a very nice Sony 5-disc changer that I still have today. Built like a tank and my family believed that spending 20-30% more for vastly higher quality was worth it. I loved that player and used it for years. Now it collects dust
Nearing 20 years since I bought a cassette, so is the metaphor even worth considering now-a-days?
I thought this concept of how a browser could work in the future was rather interesting. The idea of all of these things working seamlessly within the browser would be EXTREMELY nice, e.g. actions that can be dropped onto any set of web data, live communication with others. It did get more far-fetched though when switching to the handheld browser object as I find it doubtful that the same UI would be used for such a small device. It simply didn’t look usable in that form factor.
UPDATE: Thanks to WordPress Support for helping to get the embedded video to work.
I thought I would check out this new free & open source blogging app from WordPress. I’m very impressed so far. Now if I could find a way to upload pics to my ImageShare site on Mobile Me my mobile blogging experience would be complete.
I’m sitting on the sofa watching my Batman Begins Blu-ray and wondering if the magic of CGI could easily replace Katie Holmes with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Warner, that would be a double dip I would support Back later with more from the beach…
Woot! I love 1Password on my Mac and this is great news. What’s even better is that for a limited time, they’re releasing it for free.
It sounds like they’ve reworked a few things by now having two classes of passwords, one that requires a four digit code and one that needs your main password. I think this is a great idea as I know that I hold my password to the iPhone Blog’s forums and the password to my bank account at very different levels. Oh, also, the app can’t integrate with Mobile Safari because of Apple’s rules so they initiated the browser inside of the app so you will want to do all secure communication within 1Password and not the default Mobile Safari.
So, all around great news, I just can’t wait to try it. Now all we’re waiting for is Apple to let it out of the gates.
Cool Netflix/Blockbuster iPhone app that may be coming to the App Store called DashbusterMobile. Looks great, but he’s waiting to be accepted into the App Store as an official developer.
Check out the sites for a nice flash-based screenshot slideshow…
I love this as I really think teams should have friendly competition. We all work in the same industry and there is no reason whatsoever that we can’t be cordial. After all, increased focus on the web is good for both teams and in my opinion they benefit from the challenge. I think a rising tide really does raise all boats.
