Possible new features coming in iPhone OS 2.2

October 25, 2008

In Beta 2 of iPhone OS 2.2, developers are finding that the following cool features are present, but may or may not see the light of day with this release:

  • Google Street View
  • E-mailing of current location
  • Downloading of Podcasts

The last one is what caught my eye the most. I would LOVE to be able to download my podcasts directly on the iPhone as I would have much less reason to ever dock as I already get mail, calendar, contact changes via IMAP or push (well, push-y sync).

This would be a great feature and I hope they ship 2.2 with all of this enabled soon…

AT&T to Remain Sole US iPhone Carrier into 2010?

AT&T to Remain Sole US iPhone Carrier into 2010? - Mac Rumors

It looks like AT&T & Apple negotiated an extension of their exclusivity agreement in the US around the launch of the iPhone 3G. I’m not sure whether this is good news or not for anyone or not. I really can’t think of a US carrier that would treat us better as they all seem to be foul in their own special way. Verizon, Sprint, and Alltel (the first two of which I have tried) are based on CDMA which I dislike as it is US only. No one else is using it. However, as they switch to LTE in the future, maybe the value proposition will be better. T-Mobile is a non-starter as they don’t support much at all of NC and if anyone has a smaller 3G footprint than AT&T, it is T-Mobile. AT&T is the one GSM carrier left standing.

Now, if only they would learn to treat their paying customers better…

iPhone 3G firmware may still have some tricks left

June 20, 2008

Apple iPhone

iPhone 3G firmware has FM radio support, FOTA - iPhone Atlas

Interesting rumor. I’m not sure I care that much about either (I’d much rather the iPhone work with my Nike+), but I imagine there are some people who would be thrilled by the FM support. OTA firmware updates could be useful, but I don’t mind connecting my iPhone daily to keep it charged.

iPhone Sensors = more natural use of iPhone?

June 19, 2008

iPhone Sensors and iChat VOIP Integration? - Mac Rumors

Interesting patent application that shows that Apple is looking for new ways to make the iPhone experience more natural based on actions, location of the phone, etc. I especially like the idea of transferring calls when docked to a VOIP-based iChat. I doubt we will see any of this in iPhone firmware 2.0. This is likely forward thinking for later this year or next (if at all).

A new iSight from Apple?

June 15, 2008

Apple to Release an ‘iSight HD’? - Mac Rumors

Could we be getting a new iSight? The original Firewire-based model was quite good. I now have an iSight in my MacBook, but the thought of a true HD version of the iSight sounds quite intruiging…

More iPhone 3G details: tethering & upgrades

June 15, 2008

More iPhone 3G tidbits trickling in: No Tethering, Upgrading Policy, 2nd Proximity Sensor & more - iPhone Hacks

It looks as if tethering will continue to be unsupported. My belief is that this is entirely AT&T’s doing. Unfortunately, I don’t believe this is likely to change in the near future. Now, on to some good news. It seems that upgrades should go smoothly and that the new 2 year contract will simply replace your old contract rather than add to it. I don’t know if this is specific to current iPhone owners or if it is true for all AT&T customers…

Nike+ coming to iPhone?

Nike+ coming to iPhone, iPod touch | iLounge News

This could be good news for me as I have the Nike+ system, shoes and a Nano, but I now prefer my iPhone for some trips, so maybe soon I could use either? Also, the ability to transfer workout data prior to a sync could be useful. I’ll definitely be watching these news stories…

iPhone OS 2.0 & HW rev 2 rumor roundup

April 9, 2008

Roundup of some iPhone 2.0 news/rumor:

2.0 Beta 3: Bring the Search! - Phone different
Engadget - iPhone Contact Search & Meeting Invite Screenshot Gallery

Contact search, meeting invites, etc.

MacRumors - 3G iPhone Pricing to Remain at $399, $499? Launch At WWDC?

3G, but with price points unchanged and slightly new casing launching at WWDC in June?

These stories aren’t blowing my socks off for a brand new iPhone. I already spend the vast amount of my time on wifi, so EDGE isn’t the hindrance I had worried it would be. Now, then again, speed boosts are always welcome, but I would need something more to cause me to buy a shiny new iPhone (3G, more storage, 802.11n, longer battery life, etc.)

DTS-HD MA support coming to PS3?

April 9, 2008

PS3 firmware engineers interviewed, DTS-HD MA support on the way - Engadget HD

Interesting news on one of the gaps of the PS3 when it comes to Blu-ray playback. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes of this one, but I can’t say this is at the top of my list, but, I am not an audio geek…

Firefly Special Edition?

April 8, 2008

Firefly DVD news: Rumors for Firefly - The Complete Series: Special Edition | TVShowsOnDVD.com

I really hope this is true, but only if we get a Blu-ray version. I own the previous version and I don’t really buy DVDs any longer, but I would double-dip for a Blu-ray version. This should be very doable given that Firefly shows on HDNet or UHD (can’t recall which right now) quite often and it looks darn good.

Here’s hoping for a bit more brown coat celebration in my future :)

UPDATE:

TV Shows on DVD has confirmation from Fox that it will be coming out on Blu-ray!
