/sigh for laziness regarding 64 bit Windows

October 14, 2008

Dear Bill,

Thank you for contacting us.

Because the Flip Video Program has been designed to work on the 32-bit systems, we cannot guarantee full functionality if used on a 64-bit system. At this time, we do not have information regarding the development of an application for the 64-bit systems.

We hope this has adequately addressed your question.

Thank you,
Flip Video Support

That is the answer I got from Flip (after a couple of back and forths) when asking why I couldn’t get reasonable quality out of their “Movie Mix” feature (starkly reduces quality and lowers resolution to 320×240) or why their codec doesn’t work in Windows Movie Maker (seems to for others, but they’re probably on 32 bit).

This is simply not an acceptable answer in this day and age. 64 bit Vista is a VERY mainstream OS and came on almost every laptop I looked at. Developers, you can no longer be lazy and ignore compatibility.

Oh well, editing in iMovie ‘08 works great, so no biggie there, but I want to be able to use either platform successfully ;)

Triumph, RNC, & Fucking things up!

September 7, 2008

I thought this was rather fun. I don’t know how I supported this party for as long as I did. It is absolutely obvious that Palin is a ploy and brings NOTHING to the table except the hope of collecting disillusioned ignorant supporters of Hillary Clinton. I hope they are smart enough to realize that this is nothing but empty pandering, but I fear some will be caught in this trap…

The Republican party is a continuing epic failure waiting for the country to give them another chance. As my wife pointed out, the Daily Show appropriately stated their motto for the convention was “Give Us One More Chance, This Time we Won’t Fuck it Up”.

Please America, don’t fuck this up by electing George Bush v2, i.e. John McCain!

Illegal/unethical trampling of rights ahead of RNC convention?

Dozens Detained Ahead of Convention - NYTimes.com

In MN, Massive Police Raids On Suspected Protestors - Slashdot

I really want to see someone’s ass chewed out for this. Nothing I have seen reported led to any evidence of anything illegal occurring. If they want to protest, then that is their right (however, I think it is an empty gesture that accomplishes little to nothing). If they were doing something illegal then charge them and get it going down a legal, reasonable path rather than just trying to detain them for the majority of the convention. From what is known right now, this looks like a shakedown pure and simple to avoid legal protests, but no one can say for certain until more of the facts are known. From some of the reports, it is claimed that people were detained after simply asking to see a warrant.

As a disgusted former Republican (yes, my voting registration has changed as will my vote), I can totally believe the GOP would resort to this…

Blockbuster CEO confused by Netflix’s appeal

Daring Fireball Linked List: Blockbuster CEO ‘Confused by This Fascination That Everybody Has With Netflix’

Oh…my…God…

You’ve got to be kidding me. The Blockbuster CEO is confused with people’s “fascination” with Netflix. He also seems to be amazed that ANYONE really wants to rent from outside of the new rentals section or anyone who desires a large library to draw from.

It is simply amazing…

AT&T to Remain Sole US iPhone Carrier into 2010?

AT&T to Remain Sole US iPhone Carrier into 2010? - Mac Rumors

It looks like AT&T & Apple negotiated an extension of their exclusivity agreement in the US around the launch of the iPhone 3G. I’m not sure whether this is good news or not for anyone or not. I really can’t think of a US carrier that would treat us better as they all seem to be foul in their own special way. Verizon, Sprint, and Alltel (the first two of which I have tried) are based on CDMA which I dislike as it is US only. No one else is using it. However, as they switch to LTE in the future, maybe the value proposition will be better. T-Mobile is a non-starter as they don’t support much at all of NC and if anyone has a smaller 3G footprint than AT&T, it is T-Mobile. AT&T is the one GSM carrier left standing.

Now, if only they would learn to treat their paying customers better…

Good iPhone Car Charger with Line out?

July 13, 2008

Here’s what I want…

A decent iPhone car charger that charges and does line out via the dock connector that works when the iPhone has a case on (i.e. just use a simple dock connector). Nothing fancy. No crappy FM radio transmitters, just a simple quality audio out with power. Why is that so hard to provide?

Come on Griffin, Belkin, Monster, etc. Get your act together and develop a quality product…

Album Only…psssshhh!

June 28, 2008

Wanted Soundtrack on Amazon MP3

Wanted Soundtrack on iTunes

I saw both Wanted and Forgetting Sarah Marshall today and I found that I really liked a couple of songs from the movie, one by Nine Inch Nails and the other is called “The Little Things” which turns out to be by Danny Elfman. The former is not even on the soundtrack. I went to look for the soundtrack online and I realized that most of it is score which makes sense, but I still wanted the song “The Little Things”. Well, it is marked ‘Album Only’. WTF? Some might think this is Apple or Amazon’s doing, but it isn’t. They both have it setup this way which tells you that almost certainly that this is the record company.

Do they think that by setting it up this way that I will say, oh, whatever, I’ll just buy the whole album that is 90% stuff I don’t want. Hell no I won’t. All they do is one of the following:

  • Not sell anything as people are just annoyed by the lack of choice.
  • Drive perfectly happy consumers to pirate the song.
Neither makes them a dime, so why don’t you all just wake up and realize that above all, consumers demand choice. Give it to them, or fade further into irrelevance…

Remember to vote & vote Obama!

May 11, 2008

I want to quickly speak to voters in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Montana, and South Dakota. I hope all of you look at what is happening within the Democratic primaries and realize that Obama is leading in the popular vote and delegates, gaining in super-delegates (although I consider the whole concept of super-delegates repugnant … why should anyone else’s vote mean more than the majority of Americans?), and leading in many of the upcoming states’ polls.

You have the opportunity to end this process NOW! Obama is the more electable candidate. He is more likely to unite this country (see Hillary’s unfortunate divisive comments on race) and he will more readily pull in undecided and previously Republican voters. I can say that as a longtime Republican, I will vote for Obama. I don’t know what I would do if Hillary is the Democratic candidate. I just don’t believe I could vote for her, but I would likely consider a McCain vote damaging for the country. If Obama is not the nominee, then I will have to see if McCain can sway me, otherwise, I may just not vote at all.

Please, vote to unite this democratic party and this country by voting for Obama. I don’t want to see the best option I’ve seen in years go away by giving her the ticket…

A bit frustrated with Netflix…

February 1, 2008

Consider the screenshots below. I have taken snapshots of the top 8 movies in my Netflix queue configured to ship HD media and as SD DVDs. HD media consistently has a MUCH longer wait. It has been this way for at least a month for me (since I’ve had either HD DVD or Blu-ray) and I have to say, I’m about to lose patience. Last week, Steve Swasey (VP of Corporate Communications at Netflix) said “The studios are not replicating (discs) as fast and that’s causing the slowdown. This is short term. It should be fixed in the next couple of weeks.” I’m not entirely sure I buy that comment, but how will it be fixed within the next couple of weeks? What has changed to allow for dramatically more discs? Nothing that I’m aware of from monitoring news on the format war front.

From my POV, I won’t rent/buy a DVD if the Blu-ray is available (and I’m not buying any more HD DVDs period). I simply want the extra quality if it is available…

(Please don’t go nuts over the likely crappy movies in my queues. I like to see most movies from my preferred genres regardless of the high likelihood of sucking)

Top 8 as Blu-ray/HD DVD discs:
Top 8 Netflix Queue set as Blu-ray

Top 8 as DVD discs:
Top 8 Netflix Queue set as DVD

I’ll give this situation 2-4 more weeks and then I will likely be putting my account on hold until they get their act together and supply customers with what they expect.

UPDATE (2008-02-23):

This is starting to get better. My assumption is that Netflix allocated $X to HD media. As a business they had to determine how many renters there were who would care about HD media at this point of its adoption. This amount of money allowed them to buy Blu-ray and HD DVD titles, but given the limited number of renters, the amount led to insufficient amounts of either format. Now that Netflix (and the rest of the industry) is stopping their support of HD DVD, the full budget can be applied to Blu-ray discs. I have received 3 or 4 recent releases in the past couple of weeks. We’ll see how the glut of March releases at the top of my queue fares…

Why the Hell are people voting Clinton?

January 20, 2008

She simply cannot win in a general election. In almost every scenario she is shown to lose in the full election. There are simply too many negatives that people associate with her. People will actually go out of their way to vote against her.

Now, I know what some people will think this has to with her being a woman. No, this has to do with who SHE is. I simply couldn’t support her. I actually have stronger negative opinions of her over Bill Clinton.

If she gets the Democratic nomination, I will either vote for the Republican (if it were McCain) or likely not vote. Obama would get this long term conservative’s vote in a heartbeat.

It’s just a shame…
