Watch the First Hulk vs. Wolverine Animated Trailer!

In January 2009, Hulk will be coming to Blu-ray/DVD in a two shot animated feature: Hulk vs. Thor and Hulk vs. Wolverine. If you follow the link, you will see a VERY short snippet that Marvel is calling a trailer. Nothing yet on Hulk vs. Thor, but I think both of these sound like a lot of fun and I know I’ll be adding the Blu-ray to my collection!

So, I haven’t touched it but I followed this news closely using my Samsung Blackjack while on vacation (damn! I want an iPhone
). So, Toshiba has now come out and said that they are discontinuing their HD DVD business. Here is the press release. I am surprised that it happened as quickly as it did, but I’m not terribly bothered by the news. I do now have a dead format in my Xbox 360 HD DVD player. I’m sure I will end up selling it to someone who has a large collection who would like a 2nd player (we’ll have to see what happens).
Also, now, Universal has announced support for Blu-ray. All that is really lacking is Paramount at this point…
No one should be terribly frustrated with this situation as this is the life of an early adopter. Oh, and by the way, I think everyone should ignore the talking heads on the news that suggest that all of this is for nought and downloads will come in and trump it all. Here are my reasons:
- Downloads are still slow (steadily improving)
- Limited title availability (more so than HD optical media from what I’ve seen)
- None, and I repeat, NONE reach the same quality level as Blu-ray or HD DVD
- No purchase options - every option I have seen is a transient rental option with no long term ownership. I don’t want (nor do I think many people would) to have to re-rent a title I enjoy watching repeatedly
- Storage space - assuming ownership is allowed. Storage space would be a major problem for more than a handful of titles. Backups would be even more of an issue…
- There is something about physical ownership of movies. So far, audio is different as it is something that is more engrained into our daily lives. People seem to want to OWN a physical movie and stick it up on the shelf…
A few more interesting points that I found on PS3Blog.net…

I thought it was about time I posted on the high-def format war that has been going on for some time. I initially considered both formats, blu-ray and HD DVD. I finally came to the conclusion that with the affordability of the HD DVD drive for Xbox 360, it would be the better choice for me initially. I got it late last year as an anniversary gift at the low price of $129 from Amazon. I proceeded to buy some discs and I got Planet Earth for $65 for Christmas last year. I always assumed that given it’s advanced features, cheap hardware prices, etc. that it would either eventually win out or that there would continue to be a stalemate for 12-18 months. Given the later, I assumed that I would buy a PS3 at some point
Well, hmmm…maybe not so much? Warner has now switched from neutral to Blu-ray exclusive as of June 2008. This only leaves 2 studios in the HD DVD camp. I believe that this is a blow that they cannot recover from. this lead me to order a PS3 2 weeks ago. I returned any unopened HD DVDs and now I am going Blu-ray exclusive. I will still submit my MIR for 5 free discs and I will watch the discs I already have or rent, but no new HD DVD purchases.
This does pain me somewhat as I have about $250 in to HD DVD, but that isn’t the end of the world. I simply don’t believe HD DVD will be able to hold onto Universal and Paramount at this point and it is only a matter of time before the format sinks into irrelevancy. I believe the HD DVD format should die off gracefully. They should cut their losses and move on, but it isn’t clear what will take place in the coming months…
Now before any of you paint me as a fanboy or negative, I would suggest this for either format given the same circumstances. This is especially true given that I started out with HD DVD first.
Hence, the moving on…

Hmmm…I’ve had time to consider Warner’s HD DVD abandonment. I’m not really angry so much as a bit annoyed at Warner’s obvious duplicity. They claimed back in December that they had made no decision to abandon their neutral stance, yet this deal didn’t happen overnight (things this big never do). So, either they are a completely inept company or they outright lied to their customers…
Not that any of that matters, but I think they should seriously consider a trade in program to help ease the transition. It is the only way to clean up their rep in light of this gaff. However, I’m not advocating a boycott or anything foolish like that, but more simply stating that I very much like Warner and this move simply takes some of the shine off for me…
As I had originally planned, I went ahead and used my Christmas money to buy a PS3. Sonystyle.com is having a good deal where if you apply for a Sony Credit Card, you’ll get $100 credit to your card and 12 months no interest for spending $299 or more. Well, the PS3 40GB is my $299 or more
$427 shipped - $100 = $327 … not too bad!
We’ll see what I order to go with it.

Hey all, it was a sleeping in morning at our home today. We spent last night with our friends, Matt & Chrissy and their boys and got home rather late which means that Ben was kind enough to let me sleep until 9AM! That is a VERY good thing
Ben was sick with a double ear infection, but the meds from the doctor already seem to be helping him get back to normal. The downside is that Heather now seems to be sick. I’m only a bit run down, but have not succumbed to anything…yet.
I’m going to head up to Blockbuster today and pick up my order of HD DVDs bought under their Buy 3 get 2 free sale:
- Bourne Identity
- Bourne Supremacy (Out of Stock - They’re going to have to ship it to me)
- Bourne Ultimatum
- Batman Begins
- Superman: The Movie
Unfortunately, some of these are double dips with standard DVD, but they’re good enough flicks to pick up in high-def.
Oh, on a total separate note, Heather and I have made a bet on who will get the presidential nomination and who will will the general election this year.
- Heather - R: McCain, D: Obama, Obama winning overall
- Me: R: Romney, D: Obama, Obama winning overall
This is an interesting turn of events. I voted for Bush the last 2 times much to my current annoyance. I now dislike any of the Republicans (save McCain, but his pro-war stance has pushed me away) and Obama has captured my attention as a possible candidate to bring the country together. I am annoyed enough with the Republicans that I went out and found the form to fill out to have my voter registration officially changed to an independent. I am rather ashamed at what the party has been doing over the past few years. This is no longer a party of personal liberty, small government, and responsibility. They now favor torture, stomping on the bill of rights, legislating morality (for quite some time), and politics of fear all in the name of “national defense”. No longer can I support this.
There is no reason to take away our freedoms to make old white men feel safe!

DVD Review - Flash… Ahhhh
I love this movie, Flash Gordon, the stylistic popcorn flick/Queen rock opera and I have wanted to own it for some time, but the previous DVD release was pulled due to licensing issues with the music (I believe). Now, it is being released again in a “Saviour of the Universe Edition”. I know I’ll be picking this guy up on release day and hopefully no lawyers will get between me and my enjoyment of this flick again

According to Joss Wheedon, he’s hoping and expecting the SE to include a full-bore cast commentary (which will ndoubtedly be awesome), the “Tam Session” videos, all of the Aussie DVD’s extras (which look like a lot of stuff!), and (yes) new cover art. I’ll say it again: shiny.
Woohoo…I will definitely be picking this up when it streets!
