Augmented Reality coming to the iPhone

A new class of apps may be coming to the iPhone and I’m rather interested in the possibilities. These will be augmented reality apps. Generally speaking, these types of apps use a live video feed, GPS, & magnetometer to overlay data on a live video feed. These are said to be coming when the new iPhone OS 3.1 ships. The video below only shows a simple case of what is possible. Ideally, any dataset could be utilized and the possibilities are endless for use cases such as:

  • Vacation/Travel Guides
  • Real Estate
  • Education
  • Guidance/Directions
