V – 2009

I loved the ‘V’ series back in the eighties. This video for the new series has some questionable special effects, but I know I’ll be glued to the TV when it comes on (at least for the first few eps)

Rumor: Palm Pre severely constrained on launch?

Palm Pre

Best Buy stores only getting 4 Palm Pres for launch day? : Boy Genius Report.

Wow, if this rumor is true (which I somewhat doubt, but given Sprint/Palm’s track record is plausible) then the Pre is going to have one tough road. 4 per Best Buy, 2 per RadioShack? I’ve read the other rumors about supply issues, but are they real or is Palm/Sprint playing the Nintendo game of limiting supply to build demand?

I don’t think either company is in any position to risk this release, so for their sake I hope this isn’t true. They will already probably only have 2 days before being washed out in the Apple news tsunami that will likely be WWDC.

Supes/Bats together on DVD/Blu-ray

I’m a real fanboy when it comes to Marvel and DC’s animated direct to DVD titles and this one looks to be no exception. Can’t wait to pick it up!

New Credit Card Rules Coming?

The Senate has now passed credit reforms that are similar to what the house passed in April. Hopefully, now the bill will go to conference and then upon passage, on to Obama for signature. The bill doesn’t do everything I want, but many of the points seem to be good common sense first steps in fixing the consumer credit industries practices. Consumer Reports Money blog runs down the main points, but the main points attempt to insure interest rates are applied in a fair way and that consumers receive adequate notification. One big point in my opinion is no over the limit fees unless notified and accepted first (purchase can be declined rather than receiving the fine).

We’ll have to wait to see what comes from a combined bill to see if it gets neutered any further…

Blow that theme song

Tetris is an awesome game and playing the theme song with glass bottles would be I imagine … challenging. No real world value here, but really cool.

The Self Improvement Quest, Part 1

This is the first in what will probably be a multi part series. I’m calling this a “Bill’s Self Improvement Quest”. Somewhere earlier this year, I decided that I needed to finally fix some things in my life. While it was a strong desire, I seem to have required a layoff to make the process an imperative. This is a multiple step process and some pieces are still very much in the early phases.

Shortly before I was laid off, I went through a sleep study at Rex. For about half the night, I only had sensors attached all over my head, chest, and legs while I was monitored. With all of this, I was supposed to try and sleep, which I seem to have actually done, but it didn’t feel like it at the time. At a bit after 1AM, the nurse informed me that I was experiencing multiple events where I stopped breathing briefly (this is the apnea part of sleep apnea) which results in a disruption to sleep. Next, they kept all of the monitors, but added a CPAP machine & mask to force “positive air pressure” into my lungs and prevents “apneas” from occuring. With the first mask, I couldn’t breathe well, but the second finally started to work for me, but wow…does it take getting used to. After 3-4 hours of sleep, I felt much better than after a “typical” night’s sleep at home. After a few weeks of waiting for the report to reach my doctor and then waiting for my machine to come in, I now have a CPAP machine of my own. Tonight will be the first night I get to use it at home and for a full night. I have high hopes that this will help provide more energy during the day and actually allow me to feel rested for the first time in years, but we’ll see what happens…

There is much more involved in this quest, but for now, this is all I’m going to discuss. When other items move out of the “planning” stages, I’ll go into detail on what is coming…

UPDATE: The first night didn’t go so well. I fought to go to sleep at 11PM and finally drifted off at some point only to wake up at 1AM. Once again, I fought to go back to sleep only to wake up at 2:30AM. Finally, after getting back to sleep, I woke back up at 4:30AM and at that point threw in the towel for the night and slept without the mask. I know this will require more persistence and effort getting used to the mask/air pressure. In time, I’m sure it will get better. I may introduce a little bit of a sleep aid at some point to ease the process, but I don’t want to go there from the beginning.

Palin decends on Twitter

I don’t know how I missed it, but Sarah Palin started tweeting under the account, AKGovSarahPalin, on April 29th. I have no idea if it is actually her or not and I have NO intention of following her, but I thought it was a topic to mention. Remember, if you want the same brilliant nuggets of genius she gave during the campaign, then please by all means head over and click the follow button. Personally, I think you’d be better off following Ashton Kutcher and believe me, that is a scary thought ;)

Insane Danny MacAskill video from April 2009

Great video that I found via Evan Doll’s Twitter feed (he’s teaching an iTunes U course I’m following on iPhone development)
