Netflix thinks Blu-ray customers can cough up a bit more…

I’m very disappointed that Netflix has chosen to raise the rates on subscribers who opt for Blu-ray. I think this is a sad mistake. They’ve already taxed my subscription once before for Blu-ray and now again in one year.

All of this while:

  • Disc costs are seeing signs of going down
  • Discs ARE more durable than DVDs
  • Disc waits are still higher than DVD for many

This is a money grab pure & simple. The response hasn’t been  pretty so far and it is definitely more angry than the previous $1 hike. I hope they rethink this plan, but personally, I’m questioning what to do at this point… Drop Blu-ray, reduce to 2 discs out at a time, go iTunes rental path, or simply absorb the cost increase…

Hmmm…lousy handling of the situation in a down economy…

Speedy solid state trials on video

I found this video over on Macenstein, but it really doesn’t matter what OS you’re running as a bunch of fast SSDs would rock regardless.

I really want to put one in my Asus Eee PC, but I just can’t justify the cost for a good SSD yet. I wouldn’t go with anything less than 64GB and I really think 128GB would be the sweet spot for me. Oh well, guess I’m not an early adopter this time around ;)

They’re really sorry for causing you pain ;)

Saw this linked via @Stepto’s tweet…

I thought it was rather funny. Prop 8’s proponents need a good reality check…

Green Lantern’s light about to shine

I read that the Green Lantern movie is set to start production in September over at Atomic Popcorn. I’m really excited at the prospect of seeing Hal Jordan, the Guardians, and likely Sinestro on the silver screen.

Okay, I have to say, they better freakin’ have a dramatic scene with the Green Lantern oath being spoken at a critical point in the story line…

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!

Bronchitis & New Toys

Leap Frog Click Start My First ComputerWell, unfortunately Ben has bronchitis, but he’s had some fun recently. A couple of days ago, we picked up a LeapFrog Clickstart My First Computer. He’s enjoying it, but he’s also still frustrated just as he was with a Sesame Street game on a PC. He simply doesn’t feel comfortable using the mouse and I seem to be having a hard time helping him. The mouse on this little guy isn’t the easiest to use, but other than that, it is nicely targetted at little ones. We’re still onlyusing the built-in games, but I think Dora, Cars, and such are in our future.

Dinosaur vs. BedtimeAnother item that has recently shown up is a new book. Dinosaur vs. Bedtime which has gone over really well. The book is really cute and it involves a lot of roaring.

ROAR…ROAR…ROAR…Dinosaur Wins!

We’re #1 :)

Hmmm…looks like federal statistics show the metro area near me, Raleigh-Cary, NC, is the fastest growing in the US, according to an associated press story picked up by our local CBS affiliate. This isn’t terribly surprising as the area has seen huge growth due to the proximity to many  tech companies & UNC, NC State, & Duke University.

No…Blu-ray != DVD

Just a quick rant…

How is that people still rate Blu-ray discs down on Amazon because it won’t play in they’re DVD player?

The marketing has been everywhere. Amazon has had the following on the top of each Blu-ray page for a VERY long time:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This disc is a high-definition disc and is compatible only with Blu-ray players. It will not play on a standard DVD player.

Sometimes I just don’t understand people. Why is it so hard for average people to pick up on new technology? I know I’m not a “normal” consumer, but I’m curious what I’m missing here. Is it just that people don’t read before buying? The discs are freaking expensive enough that I know I’d read the details before blowing $20 without knowing if it would work.

Just confused and a bit frustrated…

The case of the theft of the crappy album

As seen on Wired via Slashdot, Federal authorities are pursuing a 6-month jail term and large sums of cash from Kevin Cogill who uploaded the pre-release Chinese Democracy album from Guns N’ Roses. All in all, the case revolves around the heinous and damaging scenario by which releasing it early cost many sales. The RIAA is happy to point out that every download is a lost sale, which is of course an utter fabrication, but what I am most confused by is why was he arrested at gunpoint and why is he being threatened with jail time? This is NOT theft, it is copyright violation, while very wrong should not involve law enforcement in ANY way. This should be a civil matter.

Once again, tax payers are footing the bill to prop up a failing business model…

Marvel shifts some release dates in 2010-2012

A story on I Watch Stuff alerted me that Marvel has shifted around some of their upcoming films. Here’s the latest look at their upcoming slate.

Iron Man 2 – May 7, 2010
Spider-Man 4 – May 6, 2011
Thor – June 17, 2011
The First Avenger: Captain America – July 22, 2011
The Avengers – May 4, 2012

All of these are high on my list, with the possibly of Thor, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. It is amazing, Spider-Man 3 was pretty bad, but I’m still chomping at the bit for another go with the web slinger.
