Hex, GL, & Fury, but NO mother$@&#! snakes

Green Lantern: No Fear - cover by Alex Ross

Green Lantern: No Fear - cover by Alex Ross

I just thought I would pass along some comic book movie rumors/news that I’ve seen in the past day or so…

I’ve never followed Jonah Hex that carefully, but I think the caustic western character from the comic could do well on the big screen (not that he would be the first of the type in the genre ;) ). It looks like they’ve got Josh Brolin playing Hex and I think he could carry the role quite well. Green Lantern just floors me! This could be amazing or it could suck. I assuming this would be an origin story? There’s SO MUCH history to Green Lantern, but how will they handle it all?

  • Which Green Lantern? Alan Scott (not likely), Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, or Kyle Rayner?
  • How will they handle the special effects of the power ring? Will it be the original magical or the technological ring?
  • Will the Green Lantern Corp. be featured?
  • Will the Guardians play a role?
  • Will Sinestro be the villain?

Ah…possibly a whole year and a half or so to consider, debate, and follow the developments just like the fan boy I am :)

Pixar Blu-rays coming May 19th?

Blu-ray covers for Monster's Inc. and A Bug's LifeAccording to the Pixar Blog and TheHDRoom, we’ll be seeing Monsters, Inc. and A Bug’s Life on Blu-ray on May 19th in advance of the theatrical release of Up. The cover mock-ups aren’t final yet, but the price seems a bit high to me. ~$40 is just asking a bit much for Blu-ray, but maybe not as I KNOW I will be buying them. Pixar movies just don’t seem to have an upper end for me, so maybe Disney/Pixar has targeted the perfect price?

Runway show for the geeks?

Some interesting geek clothing from the Early Show. At first I almost ignored it as a slight on the geek community until I saw that Andy Ihnatko was their guest for the segment which at least gives the clip some credibility in my eyes. I really liked the gloves and the tactical/cargo pants. The jackets were interesting and maybe I’ll consider one some day.

You’d think the content providers would want us to watch…

Okay, this isn’t calm, collected, or PC…but,

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE CONTENT PROVIDERS IN THIS WORLD???

Okay, stepping back. Hulu is removing the ability of Boxee to display any Hulu content. If we take them at their word, this is by request of the content providers. I really have just about had it with the TV, movies, and music industries. These events are likely not new to most readers of this blog, but I just find it absurd. We have spent YEARS educating the recording industry that the ways of the past are a failing concept and that they must embrace the new age where consumers want their content when they want it and where they want it. Now, after all of that fighting, we have services like Amazon’s MP3 Store and an iTunes store moving towards a DRM-free music model (I still always buy from the former nowadays).

If you make your content available in a way that consumers can absorb easily, at their discretion, and at an affordable price then piracy diminishes. If not, it thrives. This has been shown time and time again. I used to buy DVD sets of TV shows I liked. For the most part, I don’t do this any longer. I prefer high-definition content (where it makes sense) and I now understand that most of the content won’t be watched over and over. Therefore, I would purchase in Blu-ray or something like the iTunes TV store for shows I truly love. However, even that is a rarity as I think Blu-ray TV and the iTunes Store are (for the most part) VASTLY overpriced unless I want to own it forever. Also, the DRM is painful (more on the latter) as I like to walk the line between Macintosh and Windows and many formats don’t play equally nice on both (think iTunes videos under Windows Media Center – DRM FAIL). So, in many cases, except where I must have the content (rare), I just refuse to buy and stream on a site like Hulu. I don’t go to many other sites due to the forced software installation (I’m looking at you ABC) or ridiculously low amounts of actual full shows.

It’s getting to the point where I will either stop watching some content due to the pain of viewing it. Others will likely just resort to pirating it. The content providers need to understand that monetizing through pre-roll, overlays, banners, etc. need to be used, content needs to be fully available all shows, all episodes (for at least the current season if not more). Content Providers: get with it and do your damn jobs and in turn I will watch your content and maybe, just maybe pay attention to your ads. I will say I notice them on Hulu as their short enough that I don’t look away to something else. If Hulu is being honest, I hold them as innocent in this fight and will continue to use the service, but I wish they would out the idiots who requested this.

Sorry for the rant as I don’t even currently use Boxee, but this is just ridiculous!

Oh, and as always, my opinions and statements are mine alone.

UPDATE:

Okay, I calmed down and felt I could write a less venomous update, but then I saw this on Hulu (bolding added for emphasis):

Episodes 13-17 will be posted on Hulu the day after their TV broadcast. Subsequent episodes will be posted 8 days after their original broadcast date.

Season 4.5 episodes are available for 28 days.

Ugh! The final episodes which started Friday will be delayed for 8 days?!? What are they thinking? Why do the studios seem hell-bent on ensuring that people who want to see their content have very little way to legally?

Pathetic…truly pathetic…

God of War 3 trailer

I checked the God of War 3 trailer out last night and it looks interesting (if you search, you can find a downloadable at 720p or 1080p, but I’ve lost the link I used). I’ve heard the video is supposed to be actual game video, but it’s hard to know if that’s true or if it’s really just a render that is used as an opening or transition in the game. I doubt I’d buy this, but I’ve been jonesing to play a God of War in HD for some time, so I’ll at least half to rent it or grab a demo.

Note: the video is very bloody, so I would watch in the presence of children (possibly NSFW depending on your work)

Transformers 2 Teaser out

I just watched the new Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen teaser trailer. It’s definitely better than the Superbowl TV spot, but still leaves a lot of questions hanging out there.

Check out the above link for the HD versions. You really should watch all trailers in 720p or 1080p as it’s just more fun that way, but if you must, I found this version on YouTube that could be embedded:

Pizza & Pete’s Dragon

Pete's Dragon Movie PosterJust got Ben to bed. I let him stay up a tad longer as we we’re eating dinner (Pizza with a cupcake for desert) and watching Pete’s Dragon. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this film as a child (it really captured my imagination), but I had also forgotten the following:

  • How explicit the Gogans are with their theme of child enslavement & cruelty
  • How explicit Doc Terminus is with his plans for Elliot
  • How MUCH singing & dancing there is throughout the film

All in all, it was still good and I’m glad I got to watch it with Ben. He’s still a bit too young to pick up on the above negatives, but I feel he will sooner or later…

I’m trying to introduce Ben to more of the Disney back catalog when pretty much every film was fun and interesting. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, we’ll be able to take him to Disney World. I don’t want to over-commercialize him, but I think many of these movies are key for anyone wanting their children to grow up loving movies and hopefully…hopefully…remain a child at heart well past adolescence…

IKEA Minnen Drake (Stuffed dragon)After we finished with the movie, I gave Ben a bath, but I also pulled out a toy that I’ve had in my office for ~1 – 1.5 years, a long snake long dragon from IKEA. He loves it and now it is sleeping right inside his bedroom door. I’m not sure if that was some plan for protection, but he didn’t seem afraid or nervous when he did it. I’m guessing he just liked the look of it sleeping on his floor.
