Loving the AlBook

Well, I am in Easley, SC sitting in my mother-in-law’s kitchen. This is the half way point to Birmingham, AL where my family lives. James graduates in < 3 days and we’re heading down. I just got done playing a bit of World of Warcraft, Burning Monkey Mahjong, and checking the e-mail/news.

It is so nice having a laptop that holds a charge and has very fast wireless access. Not to mention the fact that this laptop is a beauty. I have christened her, ‘Silverfox’. Yes, I know the name is a bit cheesy and redundant, but I like it. More later…

Cisco VPN Client

A new Cisco VPN Client is now available. You can check out some details here, but basically they now support Tiger (10.4).

Unfortunately, Cisco has an incredibly dumb policy requiring that you have a SmartNET login with an Encryption entitlement just to download the software. Basically, you have to have a support agreement to get the client. This is awfully annoying as the client is mostly worthless without something to connect to…which is where they should be concerned about requiring an agreement to get updates…on the server/device side…

I don’t know how many of you were waiting on this, but it has been annoying that they didn’t get this out with Tiger’s release as at least one Mac was stuck on Panther waiting for this. Luckily it happened sooner than I had feared it would.

Wow…what a week it has been

It has been a rough week. First off, I am sick right now and not too terribly happy about that, but such is life. I think the fact that I have worked rather late Monday, Wednesday, and Friday hasn’t helped me ward off the cold ;) but not much can be done there as the work is there regardless of whether I am sick or not :)

The coolest thing is I finally ordered my new 15″ Apple PowerBook. It hasn’t gotten here yet and just left Shanghai, China yesterday, but it should be arriving late this next week. I have to say that I can’t wait. I upgraded the VRAM to 128MB to attempt to future proof it some degree and if I ever inherit a fortune, I can buy the 30″ Apple Cinema Display. The only other upgrade I made was to bump the internal 80GB 5400RPM drive to 100GB. Even though I have an old iBook and a iMac G4, I would like to turn the PowerBook into my only really used mac with the others serving some, as of yet, undetermined purpose… “One Mac to Rule Them All” as it were.

Right as the PowerBook was being prepped for shipping, I ordered a new sleeve for it. My iBook G3 has stayed in very good shape over the last almost 4 years and I attribute that to care on my part and a padded sleeve. I finally decided on the Sleevecase by WaterField. I found so many reviews raving about their quality and I liked the options they offered. I personally chose the flap, but left off the D-Rings and shoulder-strap. It too shipped yesterday and is to arrive this next week, so we’ll see if all of the reviews are correct.
