Just some useful (or not) suggestions for the currently unemployed:
- O’Reilly Safari 14-day free trial
Refresh or learn something new. Up to ten books allowed in the free trial. Some very cool books are available that I have wanted to look into, such as BSD Hacks, Network Security Hacks, etc.
- NetFlix
Watch some free flicks during the trial to pass the time
The News & Observer story on our get together last Monday made the Sunday business section today. I think the article was pretty good and seems to match up how we all actually feel about our tenure at Oculan and the future. The people make it worth it and there are some great ones I won’t forget from Oculan.
If you click the more photos link, I got in a nice snapshot with Vann and Peter. This is the picture that showed up with the main story in the paper so it looks like the online and paper editions flip-flopped what picture led with the story. I’m not sure why they put me in the picture as I am sure some of the others must have been better, but oh well, I’m not complaining
So, back earlier than I expected.
I have uploaded my resume to my website. You can find it in MS Word doc format or in Adobe PDF format.
If you know of anyone looking for a support engineer, developer, or tester that looks to match my skillset, please drop me a line.
Thanks,
Bill
Well, I have decided that my best option is to stay with IT. I do enjoy it and it simply has a much better career path than most of what I was considering going back to school to learn. I should have my resume up on the site tomorrow. It is almost finished, but I have a few details left to add.
I picked up Bubba Ho-tep and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King on tuesday. I probably will sit down with LOTR: ROTK tonight and Bubba Ho-tep will be this weekend. The latter has a commentary by “The King” which promises to be very entertaining.
Probably be back with more a bit later…
Got started on to my new copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix audio CDs. I can’t wait to watch Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in early June. I’m listening to music and the audio books while I read up on possible jobs or going back to schools. I am still not sure what I am to do, but hopefully, I’ll get some more solid plans made this next week.
Well, as of 4:00 today I am unemployed. I have been laid off and the company is no more. It has closed its doors. It was a good run with great people and I enjoyed my time immensely. It is not a total shock, but I didn’t think it would happen so soon. I haven’t really decided what to do yet. I am dusting off my resume, but I am also kicking around going back to school. I just need some time to think, but in the meantime, I will be posting the resume here.
To all my comrades who took their leave today as well, it was my distinct pleasure to work with such a great group of people. I learned much from the combined expertise and I am most sorry to lose that opportunity. I hope you all find work as fast as possible and I am sure you will with the talent that you possess.
How cruel…I woke early up this morning and was simply convinced it was Sunday. Ugh…I was in such a good mood when I thought I was going to have an additional lounging afternoon. This is all considering I spent a nice chunk of the weekend doing chores
Oh well, gave me some time to listen to more of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire…

I am still playing with WordPress, but I do still prefer Movable Type. Six Apart has revised their pricing slightly and added an “extension license” for 1 author/weblog for $9.95. This is good, but the base price is still to high. They have also clarified some points in the license and in general have addressed many of the concerns. I will be getting a discount as a beta tester and this may mollify me for the time being. I don’t think I am ready to switch as this point. We’ll see what the future brings
I just got done painting our mailbox post. This is after I use paint stripper, sanded, primed, sanded, painted, and painted
I know this is one of my responsibilities, but I have to say I hate to do it. I have determined that for the most part, I really don’t like painting
So, I tried WordPress today. It is a nice system, but I have some issues with the software. My thoughts tend to follow along the same lines as this post at codepoetry
Issues:
- The UI is very sporadic. There doesn’t seem to be much order in the layout and the UI lacks a polished look.
- There is no real concept of templating
- WordPress only acts as a single blog. This removes some of the flexibility that Movable Type offers
Positives:
- Link management is really cool and I believe is something that should have been added to Movable Type. This should be an expected feautre of any developed blogging software.
- As WordPress is open-source, there is effectively little chance I could become entwined in the situation I find myself in now with Movable Type.
WordPress is a nice piece of software that simply doesn’t fit my needs. It may in the future, but it looks to have different goals than I do…
