Universal Access takes a huge step forward

Apple is stepping further into the admirable role of providing access to Mac OS X to those who have have visual disabilities. I really admire this work as I understand that screen readers under Windows are pricey. This could really aid in providing widespread access to the technology where most applications out of the box work seamlessly with the technology. I must admit I don’t know a large amount about how it works, but I still think it is a good thing to undertake.

This actual sparks some interests for me as I have been meaning to correct a lot of the deficiencies in this site with regards to accessibility. Unfortunately, I seem to have allowed other issues to take first seat, but now that the layout is settling down I feel I need to get back to these needed improvements. Most of what I know needs to be done, I have found by reading Dive into Accessibility by Mark Pilgrim. Hopefully, this weekend will offer some opportunities to work on this…

Review: Intolerable Cruelty

Intolerable Cruelty Movie Poster

2 out of 4 stars

I am not sure what to say about Intolerable Cruelty. This is an odd movie, but amazingly funny. It just has a very odd since of humor, but it is a Coen brothers film.

Basically, if you like the other Coen films, you will probably like this one. George Clooney gives another memorable performance much as he did in O, Brother Where Art Thou?. However, in this case, I think Cedric the Entertainer stole the show with his constantly repeated tag line. Catherine Zeta-Jones was absolutely beautiful and she portrayed the gold digging wife quite well.

All in all, it was a fun rental.

Review: Runaway Jury

Runaway Jury Movie Poster

1 out of 4 stars

Heather and I watched Runaway Jury on DVD tonight and wow, did it suck… Well, let me rephrase that…

wow, did it suck… considering that we just finished listening to the unabridged audiobook from Audible. I can definitely imagine this movie being good if I hadn’t had the experience of the book.

I won’t go into plot line as I don’t want to ruin it, but suffice it to say, the movie butchered the book. The book offered wonderful suspense without any real physical action for the most part, while the movie glossed over some of the best parts of the book while trying to insert stupid action plot lines where none were needed. I believe the movie dumbed down the entire book. Now some of this was unavoidable as the book has quite a bit of narration and is very long (14 or 15 hours on audiobook), but they wiped out what made the book amazing.

If you liked the movie, chances are you will love the book.

ABC Hall of Shame in FL

Weave posted on the same story I had planned to, but I figure the more people ripping on the EB store in Florida the better as they seem to have taken customer service to a whole new level.

How can you buy stolen goods, sell them in less than the legally mandated wait period, and then overcharge the original owner when they try to reclaim the goods? My understanding of the law is that there is a waiting period before purchased, used goods can be sold. In this case it was supposed to be 15 days. Also, the rights of someone purchasing stolen goods are at about the same level as the thief. The goods should be confiscated by the police for return to their original owner, then if you want your money back, you have to sue the thief.

So, EB decides that is too difficult and decides to take advantage of a customer and possibly break some rules in order to make a few bucks? That’s not even mentioning the bad publicity. I keep thinking I must be missing some details here, but it just seems rather insane… I do like the idea of the ABC Hall of Shame though.

Yankee or Dixie quiz

Well, a friend put up a link to a Yankee or Dixie quiz and I of course had to try it out. 71% Dixie rating :)

Funny thing is many of my answers should that they were common nationwide with several that heavily favored the South, but some that were favored in the Great Lakes, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. I have no idea if the math is correct, but as he said, fun none the less.

Sleep? We don’t need no stinkin’ sleep

Sitting here, unable to sleep and wishing like hell that I could, I really think I need to find some help for my insomnia. Maybe a change in diet or some relaxation exercises? Maybe a little Tai-Chi at bedtime? Who knows. I even avoided caffiene for quite hours before I thought I would be asleep. Still, no go.

Oh well, Peter Jackson ran the Oscars and cleaned up. Nice to see him get some additional recognition. Now maybe his remake of King Kong will go well and he can get on to the real business, the Hobbit. Damn straight…

I have just finished watching the entire first season of the Shield in the past 24 hours (well with the exception of half of the pilot that I watched earlier in the week). This show really is quite addictive yet overly violent. However, the episodes are engrossing and the characters while in many cases quite nasty, are very fun to watch as they evolve and find new mistakes to make.

Can’t wait to watch season two and then check the third when it hits in about a week.
